Tinubu, Starmer Deepen UK–Nigeria Ties Amid Shared Security Concerns

Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has highlighted the persistent threat of terrorism facing his country during talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday, March 19, as part of his State visit to Britain.

Speaking at the start of their meeting at Downing Street, Tinubu described terrorism as a global challenge, stressing that both Nigeria and the United Kingdom are affected. He also pointed to climate change-related conflicts as an additional pressure shaping Nigeria’s security landscape.

The meeting marked the second and final day of Tinubu’s visit—the first by a Nigerian leader to the UK in 37 years—signalling renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries, which maintain longstanding ties in trade, defence and development cooperation. Starmer reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, expressing ambition to expand cooperation beyond current levels in key strategic sectors.

As part of the visit, Tinubu and his wife attended a state banquet hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, following ceremonial engagements including a carriage procession and guard of honour.
