President Mahama Assures Ghanaians of Stable Power Amid Ongoing Grid Upgrades

President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday, April 19, reassured Ghanaians that recent intermittent power outages are not a return to the prolonged “dumsor” crisis, but are instead linked to ongoing nationwide upgrades to the electricity distribution system.

Speaking during a visit to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) as part of his “Resetting Ghana” tour, the President explained that Government is replacing ageing and overloaded transformers to improve long-term power stability.

About 2,500 new transformers have been procured under the first phase of the intervention. He noted that rapid population growth has stretched existing infrastructure, making upgrades necessary to ensure reliable electricity supply. He also emphasized the importance of local production, highlighting that many of the transformers are now manufactured in Ghana.

Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor added that installations are already underway in parts of the country, including Tamale, Accra and Tema, with further works planned for Kumasi and other regions.

The rollout is expected to last about three months in its initial phase, with customers to be notified ahead of planned outages. The Government says the broader programme aims to modernize Ghana’s power distribution network, improve responsiveness to faults, and prevent a recurrence of past electricity crises.
