Cameroon’s Government has dismissed reports suggesting that President Paul Biya is unwell, insisting he remains in good health and continues to oversee national affairs.
Speaking on June 18, 2026, in Yaoundé, the Minister of Communication and Government spokesman, René Emmanuel Sadi, described the reports as “malicious and unfounded speculation.”
The clarification followed a report by the magazine ‘Jeune Afrique’ on June 17, 2026, which claimed the 93-year-old president had been hospitalized in Switzerland after falling ill during National Day activities on May 20.
The Government, however, stated that President Biya is currently in Geneva and is not receiving medical treatment. It further assured that he continues to monitor state affairs with diligence and is expected to return to Cameroon “as soon as possible.”
President Biya, who has been in power since 1982, remains one of the world’s longest-serving Heads of State, with his health periodically attracting public and international attention, amid his extended tenure.
