Burkina Faso’s Armed Forces say they have killed more than 400 armed fighters during coordinated counteroffensives following simultaneous attacks on military positions on June 30, 2026.
In a statement issued on July 1, 2026, the General Staff of the Armed Forces said the assaults targeted positions in Gayeri (Sirba Region) and Solhan and Sebba in the Liptako Region, involving both the National Armed Forces and the Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland.
The military said ground troops, supported by airstrikes, responded swiftly and carried out operations that “neutralised” the attackers. Authorities also reported the recovery of significant military equipment, including more than 250 motorcycles, 353 weapons, ammunition, and communication gear.
Three soldiers were killed in the fighting, including two in Solhan and one in Gayeri. The army added that ongoing operations are continuing to track fleeing fighters and secure affected areas, while urging civilians to cooperate with security forces.
The statement also linked the attacks to Burkina Faso’s recent decision to sever diplomatic relations with France, alleging—without providing evidence—that France supports armed groups operating in the region.
