Senegal’s President Faye Elected New ECOWAS Chairman

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during the 69th ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Sunday, 19 July 2026.

Faye was unanimously chosen by West African leaders to succeed Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, who served as the outgoing chairman of the regional bloc.

As ECOWAS chairman, President Faye is expected to spearhead efforts to deepen regional integration, strengthen peace and security, and promote greater economic cooperation across West Africa.
