Zambian authorities arrested and charged the Archbishop of Lusaka, Alick Banda, on Monday, 28 September 2026, over a Toyota Hilux reportedly given to him by the late former President Edgar Lungu.
The Drug Enforcement Commission said the vehicle was suspected of having been unlawfully obtained from the Zambia Revenue Authority. Banda denied the charge and was released on bail ahead of a trial scheduled for November 2026.
His arrest follows the 13 August election, in which President Hakainde Hichilema won a second term. Banda had publicly supported an opposition challenger, and Catholics gathered to pray at a Lusaka cathedral after news of his arrest.
