Nigeria plans to establish special energy zones in key commercial and industrial centres to support 24-hour electricity supply in areas with high demand.
Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe announced the proposal in a statement on Wednesday, saying it formed part of Government efforts to expand infrastructure and meet the electricity needs of the country’s growing economy.
The proposed locations include Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano corridor in the north and the Enugu–Port Harcourt corridor in the south. Tegbe said the zones could help ease electricity generation and transmission constraints while addressing shortfalls in distribution.
Some local electricity distribution companies are expected to participate in the project, which aims to improve power delivery, meet commercial and industrial demand and strengthen distributors’ revenues.
“It also advances the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which places reliable energy at the center of economic growth, industrialization and job creation,” he said.
