Benin: Head of Cotonou National Teaching Hospital interrogated over death of 4 patients

The criminal investigation department of the Benin Police interrogated Tuesday the Director General of the National Teaching Hospital in capital Cotonou as part of investigation following the death of 4 patients last Friday as result of power deficiency.

The hearing lasted for two hours but the head of the health facility has left scot-free. Two other officials namely the head of the resuscitation department and the on-call administrator, were also investigated.

Four patients died in the resuscitation department of the hospital as result of power cut. There were seven in the unit. Three people survived.

The Tuesday hearing of the head of the hospital revealed that the teaching hospital has two generators in the event of power cut but both generators failed to take over. Two power cuts occurred, one Thursday afternoon and the second one in the early hours of Friday.

Four people were arrested on Monday in connection with the incident.
Authorities blamed dysfunction at the resuscitation department for the death of the four patients.
