Niger: Five soldiers killed in ambush

Five soldiers of the Nigerien army were killed during the ambush led by some unknown armed men, in the North of the country, the armed forces institution said on Tuesday.

The attack according to the army took place over the weekend on the road to the town of Arlit, in the Agadez region.

Abdou Sidikou Issa, Chief of Staff of army in a statement indicated that the armed men attacked a military convoy of four vehicles coming back from a mining site.

The attack also injured three other soldiers who were sent for treatment in capital Niamey. No one claimed responsibility for the attack. Niger, dominated by the Saharan desert, is grappling with insecurity and criminality mostly at its joints borders with Mali and Burkina Faso.
