Former candidate for Presidency in Cape Verde arrested for various crimes

The former candidate for President of the Republic of Cape Verde Gilson Alves was arrested on suspicion of committing several crimes on the island of São Vicente, the Cape Verdean Judicial Police (PJ) said Wednesday.
In a statement, the PJ said the arrest was made by the Criminal Investigation Department in São Vicente, through its Crimes Against Persons Investigation Brigade, on Tuesday, out of flagrante delicto.
The man, 41 years old, is suspected of committing a crime of attempted murder, offenses against physical integrity and threats. According to the PJ, the facts occurred in the locality of Chã de Alecrim, between March and June, following disagreements between the suspect and victim not identified, using a firearm and a knife.
Gilson Alves was heard in the Judicial Court of São Vicente, which applied as a measure of coercion to preventive detention. He was a candidate for President of the Republic of Cape Verde in 2021, having achieved 0.8% of the votes. Besides Gilson Alves, the other candidates were José Maria Neves, who won the first round (51.7% of the votes), Carlos Veiga (42.4%), Casimiro Pina (1.8%), Fernando Rocha Delgado (1.4%), Hélio Sanches (1.1%), and Joaquim Monteiro (0.7%).
