At least 11 people were killed and 7000 homes were destroyed, when Cyclone Gamane veered into Madagascar’s north.
The storm was moving at a speed of 150km/h and power cuts complicated the mission of rescue operations.
More than 20,000 people fled their homes to government shelters, the National Bureau of Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) said.
Roads and bridges collapsed in the cash-strapped country while landslides destroyed farms.
Early last year, cyclone Freddy and tropical storm Cheneso killed at least 37 people and forced thousands from their homes.
