Nigerian police said it managed to secure the release of 20 medical students who have been kidnapped on August 15 by gunmen.
The students were headed to the southeastern state of Enugu, when they were kidnapped, news agencies reported.
Northern Nigeria has been plagued by kidnapping for ransom by armed groups, with Nigerian law enforcement agencies unable to end the practice.
“We confirm the release on Friday of our brothers and sisters and some other Nigerians who have been in captivity in Ntunkon forest, Benue state,” Nigerian police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi said.
He said no ransom was paid, rather they were “rescued tactically and professionally”.
