Libya’s Development and Reconstruction Fund has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian Arab Contractors Company providing for the construction of the Libyan segment of the international road linking Egypt, Libya, and Chad.
According to a post on the Fund’s Facebook page, the road will extend over 393 kilometers from Al-Awaynat to the Egyptian border and to the Chadian border. The project aims to enhance connectivity between the three countries and facilitate trade and transportation across the region.
The Fund announced that work on the project will commence soon. The road will eventually run up to the Red Sea, positioning it as a key commercial route for transit trade in its initial phase. This development is expected to significantly bolster regional trade and economic integration.
On August 31, the government appointed by the House of Representatives suggested establishing a tripartite committee comprising Libya, Chad, and Egypt to explore the implementation of the international road project. During a meeting in N’Djamena with Osama Hammad, the appointed head of the Libyan government, Chadian President Mohamed Idriss Deby announced that the Egyptian government is willing to finance the road project. However, this financing is contingent upon Libya’s agreement and assurances of security for the companies involved in the construction.
