Opposition parties in Cape Verde propose local elections for December 1st

Cape Verde’s parliamentary opposition proposed on September 9 holding local elections on December 1, following a meeting with Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva.

Rui Semedo, president of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), and João Santos Luís, president of the Independent and Democratic Cape Verdean Union (UCID), suggested December 1 as the most feasible date. They considered November 24 or December 1 but preferred December 1.

Both leaders emphasized that earlier hearings could be held to explore alternative dates and allow more time for organizing the electoral process. Additionally, UCID’s João Santos Luís raised the issue of automatic voter registration to boost voter participation, noting that the revision of the Electoral Code addressing this has been pending in parliament for two years.

The Prime Minister continued discussions with other parties and will announce the election date after the Council of Ministers meets on Tuesday, September 10, according to the Minister of Justice. Earlier this year, the president of Cape Verde’s National Electoral Commission proposed holding the elections in November.
