Kenyan President William Ruto announced on Friday October 11 that 600 additional police officers will soon be deployed to support the multinational security Mission in Haiti. Kenya, which already has nearly 400 officers on the ground, along with a small contingent from Jamaica and Belize, plans to send the new officers next month after completing their pre-deployment training.
Speaking alongside Haitian interim Prime Minister Garry Conille, Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to deploying 2,500 officers by January 2025 and urged the international community to provide more funding and equipment for the mission.
Conille, visiting Kenya after a gang attack in Haiti killed 109 people, called for quicker international support. Armed groups, controlling 80% of Port-au-Prince, have fueled a violent crisis in Haiti, which has seen over 3,600 deaths since January and forced 700,000 people to flee their homes.
