The Mozambican National Elections Commission (CNE) is set to announce the results of the October 9 general elections this Thursday, October 24, a process that will need validation and proclamation by the Constitutional Council. This announcement coincides with demonstrations and strikes called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane.
CNE spokesperson Paulo Cuinica stated that the official election results, including those from the seventh presidential elections—where current president Filipe Nyusi was not a candidate—as well as legislative elections and provincial assemblies and governors, will be disclosed at 3:30 pm local at the Joaquim Chissano International Conference Centre in Maputo.
The CNE had 15 days to announce the results of the October 9 vote, after which the Constitutional Council must officially proclaim the outcome, though no specific deadline has been set for completing this process or addressing any appeals.
Meanwhile, candidate Venâncio Mondlane has called for two days of nationwide “peaceful” protests and strikes starting October 24. He urged citizens to join in, stating, “We are going to sacrifice two days of our lives so that we can all demonstrate.” Mondlane claimed the CNE is preparing to announce “profoundly false results” and argued that the election outcome does not reflect the people’s will, particularly at the provincial level, where the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) and its candidate, Daniel Chapo, reportedly secured over 60% of the votes.
In response, Daniel Chapo stated earlier in the week that Frelimo remains calm and composed as they await the official announcement of the election results.
