Ethiopia and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) have discussed expanding cooperation in infrastructure, energy and climate-resilient development.
Finance Minister Ahmed Shide met AIIB President Zou Jiayi in Addis Ababa on 9 September 2026 during her first official visit to Ethiopia since assuming office. Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew also attended the meeting.
The discussions explored possible AIIB financing for major infrastructure projects, including the proposed Bishoftu International Airport. The two sides also considered concessional financing and partnerships with other multilateral development banks for energy and climate-related initiatives.
Mr Shide briefed the AIIB president on Ethiopia’s economic reforms and infrastructure programme, citing the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam as a major achievement.
Ms Zou acknowledged Ethiopia’s contribution to regional power integration and reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting the country’s infrastructure agenda.
Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation and mobilise long-term financing for sustainable and inclusive development projects. Once completed, the Bishoftu airport is expected to expand Ethiopia’s aviation capacity and reinforce its position as a regional and international aviation hub.
