U.S. President Joe Biden is set to visit Cape Verde on Monday November 2, making a stop on the island of Sal during his trip to Angola, the Cape Verdean Government announced on Sunday, December 1. Biden will be welcomed by Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva at Amílcar Cabral International Airport at 8:30 a.m. local time (9:30 a.m. in Lisbon). This marks the first-ever visit by a sitting U.S. President to Cape Verde.
The United States hosts the largest Cape Verdean diaspora globally, a key factor in the strong and longstanding ties between the two nations.
The Cape Verdean Government described Biden’s visit as “historic,” emphasizing that it highlights the archipelago’s “growing credibility and influence on the world stage” as a “model of stability and democracy.”
Cape Verde was selected last year as a recipient of a new development aid package from the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). The Government plans to present projects for funding under this program, although the total funding amount has yet to be determined. These projects are expected to be finalized within the next two years.
