China has solidified its position as Egypt’s leading trading partner for imports during the first eight months of 2024, according to data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). This represents a significant increase in trade, compared to the same period in 2023, highlighting the deepening economic ties between the two nations.
The data shows that Egypt’s imports from China surged to approximately $9.763 billion from January to August 2024, compared to $8.550 billion in the same period of 2023. This increase of around $1.213 billion reflects China’s growing influence in Egypt’s import market. In addition to China, the list of Egypt’s top five import sources includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Germany, showcasing a diverse range of trading partners.
Among the goods imported from China, electrical appliances and their components ranked highest, with imports valued at $2.435 billion in the first eight months of 2024. This marks a substantial rise from $1.577 billion during the same period in 2023, an increase of $878.669 million. The sharp growth reflects Egypt’s increasing reliance on Chinese electronics to meet domestic demand and support industrial activities.
Automobiles and tractors followed as the second most imported category, with imports reaching $638.496 million in 2024. This figure represents a dramatic rise from $272.726 million in 2023, an increase of $365.770 million. The surge in automotive imports highlights Egypt’s efforts to meet rising consumer demand and support infrastructure development, with China playing a pivotal role in supplying these essential goods.
This robust trade growth underscores China’s prominence in Egypt’s import market, fueled by its competitive pricing, diverse product offerings, and strategic role in fulfilling Egypt’s needs for high-value goods such as electronics, machinery, and vehicles. The strengthening of this trade partnership aligns with Egypt’s broader economic goals of fostering development through reliable global trade alliances.
