Tunisia: Pardon for 1,570 prisoners to mark Revolution Day

On the occasion of the December 17 Revolution Day, which commemorates the anniversary of the Tunisian revolution, President Kais Saied announced a special presidential pardon benefiting 1,570 convicts.

The pardon will lead to the immediate release of 270 prisoners, while the remaining individuals will benefit from sentence reductions or other leniencies as part of the initiative.
The December 17 Revolution Day holds profound symbolic significance for Tunisia, marking the beginning of the 2010-2011 uprising that led to the fall of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and sparked broader movements across the Arab world.

The announcement follows a series of reviews conducted by relevant judicial and correctional authorities, who assessed the cases of eligible inmates. The selected individuals include those who have demonstrated good behavior and rehabilitation potential during their incarceration, ensuring that the decision upholds both humanitarian principles and public security concerns.

This act of clemency not only serves as a tribute to the sacrifices of the Tunisian people during the revolution but also reaffirms the state’s commitment to fostering hope, dignity, and second chances for its citizens. President Saied’s initiative highlights the ongoing efforts to strengthen social cohesion and reflects the spirit of forgiveness and progress as Tunisia continues to honor its revolutionary legacy.
