AU Chairperson, First Vice-President of Bureau of AU Assembly hold consultations

The President of Mauritania and current Chairperson of the African Union, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, held a phone discussion with the President of Angola, João Lourenço, who serves as the First Vice-President of the Bureau of the AU Assembly. The conversation underscored the commitment of both leaders to maintain regular consultations and strengthen coordination among African Union leadership in alignment with their respective roles.

During the discussion, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani highlighted the importance of advancing the African Union’s priorities, particularly in the areas of peace and security across the continent. In response, President João Lourenço provided an update on the progress of the Luanda Process, a pivotal initiative aimed at achieving stability in the conflict-affected eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This process has been a cornerstone of Angola’s efforts to foster peace in the region.

The dialogue between the two leaders reflects their shared determination to address Africa’s pressing challenges collaboratively, emphasizing the need for enhanced cooperation within the African Union. This exchange also reinforces the commitment of the organization’s leadership to work collectively toward solutions that benefit the entire continent.
Notably, President João Lourenço is set to assume the presidency of the African Union in February 2025, a transition that promises continued collaboration and focus on the Union’s strategic goals.
