Mauritania and Senegal have expressed their shares resolve to strengthen further their already strong cooperation ties and to enhance their relations across multiple sectors, including security, energy, transport, and fisheries.
This came in the joint statement issued following the visit Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko paid to Mauritania January 12-14, at the head of a high-level delegation.
The visit, at the invitation of Mauritania’s Prime Minister, Mokhtar Ould Diay, aimed to reinforce historical, cultural, and political ties between the two countries, following previous high-level exchanges.
Discussions focused on key issues such as regional security, counter-terrorism, migration, and climate change resilience. Both officials emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to promote stability and development in the Sahel region.
The two sides agreed to strengthen their cooperation in areas like energy, with a focus on the “Great Turtle Ahmeyim” gas project, and transport, including the Rosso Bridge project aimed at improving cross-border mobility. They also reviewed joint efforts in fisheries and livestock, highlighting the success of collaboration in providing resources during key periods such as Eid al-Adha.
They pledged to enhance private sector involvement through initiatives like the Mauritanian-Senegalese Economic Forum, planned for October 2025. Additionally, a visit to Mauritania’s industrial facilities in Nouadhibou showcased the country’s progress in sectors like mining and fisheries.
