ZACL (Zambia Airports Corporation Limited) has sought to reassure on January 15 the public regarding concerns over the potential closure of Solwezi Airport due to gully erosion.
In a statement, ZACL Managing Director Ngoza Matakala confirmed that Solwezi Airport, the key aviation hub in North-Western Province, remains fully operational. While gully erosion has been observed near the airport, it has not affected the runway or flight schedules.
Matakala explained that ZACL, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Logistics (MTL) and the Zambia Civil Aviation Authority (ZCAA), has taken proactive measures. These include regular inspections and consultations with experts from the Geological Survey Department and the Department of Water Affairs to assess and manage the situation.
The findings from experts have led to the development of engineering designs for remedial works, which are set to begin later this year.
Additionally, ZACL has been allocated land for the construction of a new airport in Solwezi, with feasibility studies already underway. ZACL assured the public of its continued commitment to safe and efficient airport services, maintaining connectivity across Zambia and beyond.
