Ghana: Eight dead in clash between miners and military at Obuasi Gold Mine

A violent confrontation between small-scale miners and military personnel at the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has resulted in eight deaths. The clash, which took place late night on January 19 in the Ashanti Region, has heightened tensions in the town, with four vehicles set ablaze during the violence.

Eyewitnesses reported that a group of armed miners stormed the mine’s premises around midnight, opening fire on soldiers stationed there. The army responded, resulting in the deaths of at least eight miners. Several others have been injured and are receiving treatment at local hospitals.

Following the incident, angry miners have taken to the streets, engaging in vandalism and setting fire to buses, causing further unrest in Obuasi. The cause of the attack remains unclear, and authorities have yet to provide a full explanation. The situation in the area remains tense, with security concerns growing.
