South Sudan has lifted the temporary ban on Facebook and TikTok, which was imposed last week after videos showing alleged killings of South Sudanese citizens in Sudan circulated online.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) confirmed in a letter dated January 27 that the graphic content, which was linked to violent protests and retaliatory attacks, had been removed from the platforms. This prompted the decision to lift the ban.
Napoleon Adok Gai, the director of the NCA, emphasized the need for a balanced approach to address online incitement while safeguarding the rights of the population. The disturbing videos, showing violence tied to ethnic attacks in Sudan, were condemned by rights groups. The Sudanese army and its allies have been accused of carrying out targeted attacks on civilians, which were widely shared on social media before being removed.
The ban had prompted criticism from several sides, including from the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
