UN Engagement in Sudan’s Peace Process Reaffirmed in Port Sudan Meeting

A message from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres concerning the organization’s role in supporting peace efforts in Sudan was conveyed on Wednesday April 23 to General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council.

The message was delivered by UN Special Envoy Ramtane Lamamra during a meeting held in the eastern city of Port Sudan. The meeting was also attended by Sudan’s Acting Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, Idris Ismail, according to a statement released by the Sovereignty Council.

Ismail said during a press briefing that the contents of Guterres’ message addressed the role being undertaken by the United Nations in Sudan amid both ongoing conflict and the pursuit of peace. Al-Burhan’s appreciation for the UN’s involvement was reiterated, and assurances were given of Sudan’s readiness to assist in the facilitation of humanitarian assistance to those affected. Emphasis was placed on the importance of continued international cooperation in resolving the country’s challenges.

Expressions of optimism regarding Sudan’s future were shared by Lamamra, who highlighted the potential for peace and the rebuilding of national capacities once stability has been secured. The UN’s commitment to supporting Sudan in its transition towards peace and development was reaffirmed. However, the statement issued failed to disclose details regarding the envoy’s arrival or the expected length of his visit. Since the outbreak of violence on 15 April 2023, Sudan has endured extensive human suffering, with over 20,000 lives reportedly lost and 15 million people displaced, though alternative research suggests the death toll may be significantly higher.
