First Mpox Cases Found in Lomé, as Health Officials Are On High Alert

The first confirmed cases of Mpox, also known as monkeypox, a virus, are occurring in Togo. In the capital, Lomé, three cases—two involving women and one involving a man—have been verified.

To stop the spread of this infectious disease, Togolese Health authorities have acted swiftly.

The Togolese Government formally declared the discovery of its first Mpox case on May 16, 2025. The press release states that the case involves a 22-year-old woman who lives in the Greater Lomé area and is presently receiving treatment in an infectious disease department.

Faced with this initial alert, the Togolese Ministry of Health implemented a patient isolation system to prevent transmission. Two new cases have since been confirmed. In total, they were in contact with more than 55 people, explains Professor Anoumou Dagnran, coordinator of the response committee. According to him, three-quarters of the patients developed skin lesions, particularly on the palms of their hands.

The government has stepped up public awareness campaigns, early warning systems, and epidemiological surveillance to fight this infectious virus. The Ministry of Health educates the public about what to do in the event of symptoms and stresses the value of preventive measures. In a press release, it stated, “The Government is counting on everyone’s civic-mindedness and vigilance.”
