Moroccan biologist Jinane Zouaki, an expert in assisted reproduction and reproductive genetics, has been named a corresponding academic member of the Iberoamerican Academy of Pharmacy, marking a historic first for a Moroccan, Arab, and African woman.
The appointment was formalized Tuesday during a ceremony at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Granada, attended by leading scientists from Spain, Portugal, Latin America, and Moroccan representatives.
In her induction speech, Zouaki traced the history of pharmacy in Morocco and highlighted the Kingdom’s strategic health transformation under HM King Mohammed VI’s leadership, which has bolstered Morocco’s health sovereignty and positioned it as a key industrial and competitive player regionally and internationally.
Expressing pride in the honor, Zouaki described the appointment as recognition not only of her individual achievements but also of Moroccan women and the country’s growing international scientific presence.
A native of Tetouan with a Doctorate of Pharmacy, Zouaki was the first Moroccan and African woman to receive the Medal of Privilege from the University of Granada in 2022. She is also the first Moroccan woman admitted to the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she supported medical teams by leading screening and training efforts at her molecular biology laboratory in Tetouan’s Saniat Rmel Hospital.
