Key opposition figures in Nigeria, including former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have launched on Wednesday, July 2, a new political alliance under the Africa Democratic Congress banner.
The coalition aims to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. The alliance also includes former Governors, ex-federal lawmakers, and other influential political actors.
At the unveiling in Abuja, former Senate President David Mark, serving as interim chairman of the coalition, emphasised the group’s resolve to prevent Nigeria from drifting into a one-party state. This move comes amid growing public concern over the perceived erosion of democratic competition in the country.
President Tinubu has denied accusations of attempting to establish a one-party system, despite allegations that state resources and influence are being used to lure opposition politicians into the ruling party. Critics warn that such trends could deepen political instability and weaken democratic governance across the West African region.
