US Envoy Meets Libyan Strongman Haftar to Explore Economic and Political Cooperation

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Massad Boulos, Advisor to US President Donald Trump on African Affairs, met on Thursday, July 24 with eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar at the General Command headquarters in Rajma, near Benghazi.
The meeting delved into recent developments in Libya and the wider region, with both parties expressing interest in strengthening bilateral ties—particularly in the economic and industrial sectors. Haftar’s office highlighted the strategic potential of such cooperation in fostering regional stability and sustainable development.
Boulos, in a separate statement on social media platform X, reaffirmed US support for Libya’s institutional unification, the preservation of national sovereignty, and the pursuit of a peaceful and inclusive political future. His visit to Haftar followed earlier meetings in Tripoli with key figures of the UN-backed Government of National Unity, including Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and Presidential Council head Mohammed Menfi. The trip underscores renewed US interest in engaging all factions in Libya’s fractured political landscape.
