Kenyan security forces on Monday thwarted a planned terror attack in Garissa County, near the Kenya-Somalia border, after intercepting eight suspected al-Shabab militants attempting to plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the Welmerer-Yumbia route.
The Counter-Terrorism Policing Unit said its officers acted on intelligence from local residents, engaging the suspects and recovering assembled explosives intended for use against civilians and security personnel. The police commended the bravery of the officers and the cooperation of the local community in preventing what could have been a deadly assault.
Authorities said the explosives were destroyed as part of intensified operations targeting al-Shabab cells operating along Kenya’s northeastern frontier. Security agencies have since strengthened surveillance in the area, which has long been considered a haven for the militant group due to its proximity to Somalia. The latest operation underscores Kenya’s continued resolve to secure its borders and safeguard communities vulnerable to extremist infiltration.
