Uganda has fully restored internet services nationwide, bringing an end to a temporary shutdown imposed during the recent election period, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced.
In a statement issued on Monday, the UCC said all online services are now operational, with restrictions lifted after the completion of technical and security assessments. The commission also commended the public for their patience and cooperation during the disruption.
Uganda experienced an internet blackout ahead of the 15 January general elections, which authorities said was aimed at addressing perceived national security threats. UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo defended the measure as a precautionary step during the polls.
President Yoweri Museveni was re-elected for a seventh term, securing 71.65% of the vote, while his main rival, Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), garnered 24.72%. Museveni, now 81 years old, has ruled Uganda for nearly four decades and is Africa’s fourth-longest- serving leader. He has extended his tenure by removing presidential term limits in 2005 and 2017.
