Niger’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) said on Wednesday they had “neutralised” about 20 militants following an attack on their position in Makalondi, in the Torodi department of the Tillaberi region, near the border with Burkina Faso.
According to the army’s weekly bulletin published by state-run media outlet Le Sahel, security forces also destroyed around a dozen motorcycles and seized various weapons and military equipment during the counter-operation.
The assault took place at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time (1500 GMT) on February 4, when armed assailants targeted a joint FDS position in Makalondi. Reinforcements, backed by air and ground units, were deployed to contain and repel the attack.
The army reported that three FDS personnel were killed and seven others injured in the clashes. Defence Minister Salifou Mody conveyed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and wished the injured a swift recovery.
