Angola’s president attends Portuguese presidential inauguration in Lisbon

Angola’s President João Lourenço joined other Lusophone leaders in Lisbon on Monday, March 9, for the inauguration of António José Seguro as the new President of the Portuguese Republic.

The event marked the official transfer of leadership following the elections held earlier in February 2026.

Lourenço’s presence at the ceremony symbolised the continuity of strong historical, political and diplomatic ties between Angola and Portugal, reflecting deep-rooted relations that extend beyond formal State interactions.

The Angolan head of state arrived in Lisbon on last Sunday, where he was welcomed by the Angolan ambassador and diplomatic officials ahead of the solemn session at the Portuguese parliament.

During the proceedings, dignitaries including the King of Spain, Felipe VI, and leaders from several Portuguese‑speaking countries witnessed Seguro’s constitutional oath of office and the symbolic transfer of presidential powers.

The ceremony underscores the enduring cooperation between Angola and its former colonial partner, as both countries seek to build on diplomatic, economic and cultural bonds in the years ahead.
