U.S. embassy in Nigeria issues warning over potential terrorist threat

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja on Monday issued a warning about potential threats targeting American sites and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria. American citizens in the country have been urged to exercise heightened vigilance.

In a security notice, the diplomatic mission said it had received information suggesting a possible terrorist plot against these facilities, without providing details on the origin or specific nature of the threat.

In response, the embassy advised U.S. citizens to remain alert to their surroundings, avoid predictable routines, and review general safety procedures with family members to minimize risk.

The alert comes amid an already tense international context. Ten days ago, Washington issued a global security warning following military operations conducted by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Nigeria had also been in the security spotlight on Christmas Day, when U.S. President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes in the country, claiming they targeted jihadist groups. At the time, the intervention was justified by the alleged persecution of Christian communities in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation.
