Adebayo Adelabu has resigned as Nigeria’s Minister of Power to focus on his governorship ambition in Oyo State, with his exit set to take effect on April 30.
In a resignation letter dated April 22 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu said his decision aligns with the amended electoral law, which bars serving public officials from contesting elections. The letter was submitted through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
During his tenure, Adelabu highlighted key reforms in the power sector, including the implementation of the Electricity Act 2023, increased generation capacity to over 6,000 megawatts, and improvements in transmission and distribution systems. He also cited financial restructuring efforts that boosted sector revenues and restored investor confidence.
Despite these gains, he acknowledged ongoing challenges such as gas supply constraints, infrastructure vandalism and incomplete commercialization of the electricity value chain.
Adelabu proposed the creation of a Coordinating Minister for Energy to enhance policy alignment across power, gas and related sectors, alongside measures such as cost-reflective tariffs, expanded metering and stronger regulatory enforcement to sustain progress.
