General Assimi Goïta, Mali’s transitional leader, has formally taken over as Minister of Defence, according to a decree announced on Monday, May 4. He replaces General Sadio Camara, who was killed during an attack on his residence in Kati, on April 25.
The move consolidates Goïta’s authority as head of state and supreme commander, signalling an effort to tighten control over the military amid escalating security threats, including jihadist activity around Bamako and instability in northern regions such as Kidal.
General Oumar Diarra has been appointed Minister Delegate for Defence to support Goïta, with further military reshuffles anticipated following his transition from Chief of Staff.
