South Africa Announces Sharp Fuel Price Hike Amid Global Oil Pressure

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has announced significant fuel price increases effective Wednesday, with petrol rising by R3.27 per litre and diesel by R6.19 per litre.

The adjustments come alongside partial relief measures, including an extension of a R3 reduction in the general fuel levy for petrol and a R3.93 reduction for diesel, aimed at cushioning consumers from rising costs.

The revised pricing structure also affects other fuels, including illuminating paraffin and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which will see notable increases across retail categories.

According to the department, the surge is driven by higher global oil prices, with Brent crude rising from $93.67 to $101 per barrel amid geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Iran, as well as disruptions linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The report further noted increased demand and constrained supply for diesel and paraffin, while the rand remained largely stable against the US dollar, contributing minimally to price changes.

The development underscores continued volatility in global energy markets, with downstream effects now directly impacting consumers across South Africa.
