Namibia, Angola Sign Pact to Strengthen Statistical Systems

Namibia and Angola have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at improving governance, public policy evaluation and the production of reliable and timely statistics.

The MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was signed in Windhoek between the Namibia Statistics Agency and the National Statistics Institute of Angola on Wednesday, May 20.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Namibian agency said the agreement would enhance technical cooperation between the two institutions through institutional modernization, knowledge transfer, improved human and technological capacity, and the integration of administrative data systems.

Namibia’s Statistician General, Alex Shimuafeni, said the focus should be on effectively implementing the contents of the agreement rather than merely signing the document.

Head of Angola’s statistics institute, Joel Bumba Sambo Futi, said the pact would strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas including governance models, digital transformation, data integration, statistical modernization, cartography, geographic information systems and macroeconomic statistics.

The two agencies added that joint initiatives in training, applied research and methodological innovation would support the sustainability of their national statistical systems and improve the quality of official statistics produced by both countries.
