The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has renewed its commitment to helping Madagascar restore constitutional governance, with regional leaders meeting virtually on 29 June 2026 to review progress on political reforms following the country’s 2025 change of Government.
Opening the Extraordinary SADC Summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the bloc remained dedicated to supporting Madagascar’s transition until constitutional order is fully restored.
He stressed that reforms must be inclusive, time-bound and driven by the Malagasy people, including the participation of political exiles.
SADC had previously directed Madagascar to submit a dialogue readiness report and a draft National Roadmap by the end of February 2026 as part of efforts to ensure transparency and prepare for credible elections.
The regional body also approved the deployment of a Panel of Elders led by Joyce Banda to support the reform process, while working with the African Union and international partners to mobilise financial and technical assistance.
Leaders are expected to consider a report from the Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit held on 22 June 2026 to assess Madagascar’s progress in maintaining stability, promoting national dialogue and implementing key reforms.
