Prime minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday, July 7, said Ethiopia created more than 5.5 million jobs during the 2025/26 fiscal year, which ended on July 7, as part of Government efforts to tackle unemployment.

Presenting his Administration’s performance report to the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Abiy said about 4.9 million people secured jobs within Ethiopia, while more than 600,000 gained overseas employment. The agriculture sector generated over two million jobs, followed by the service sector with 1.8 million and the industry sector with more than 900,000.

The Prime minister said domestic job creation increased by 13 per cent and overseas employment by 27 per cent compared with the previous year.

He also noted that 40,000 young Ethiopians acquired digital skills through a Government-led digitization programme, enabling them to access remote work opportunities.
