China has pledged to deepen military cooperation with South Sudan by expanding dialogue, exchanges and collaboration between the armed forces of the two countries, reaffirming its support for peace and stability in the East African nation.
The commitment was made during a reception On Thursday, hosted 23 July, at the Chinese Embassy in Juba marking the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
Senior Defense Attaché at the Chinese Embassy, Colonel Chen Gaofeng, said China was ready to strengthen military-to-military relations with South Sudan while continuing to pursue a defensive national defense policy and contribute to international peace and security through United Nations peacekeeping operations, anti-piracy missions, counterterrorism cooperation and humanitarian assistance.
Chen also welcomed the appointment of Major General Wu Junhui as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), describing it as recognition of China’s contribution to global peacekeeping efforts.
Chinese Ambassador to South Sudan Ma Qiang reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s peace process as the two countries celebrate 15 years of diplomatic relations. He said China would continue expanding practical cooperation across various sectors while supporting the country’s efforts towards lasting peace and development.
South Sudan’s Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Lt Gen Chol Thon Balok, commended China for its longstanding support in peacebuilding, infrastructure development and economic investment, and called for closer bilateral cooperation.
The reception was attended by senior government officials, diplomats, military officers, representatives of security institutions and members of the international community.
