Ghana says more than 1,000 of its nationals will be repatriated from South Africa by July 27, 2026, marking the final phase of its evacuation exercise following anti-immigrant protests in the country.
The Ghanaian Foreign Ministry said special flights carrying migrant workers would arrive on Sunday and Monday, after 926 Ghanaians had already been evacuated. President John Mahama has urged the African Union to place the reported xenophobic attacks on its agenda, while South Africa says it will address the unrest through lawful means.
According to figures from various countries, more than 160,000 people, mostly African migrants, have left South Africa since May.
