The highway linking Nador West Med to Morocco’s national road network is nearing completion, with the project’s third section now more than 95 percent finished, Le360 reports. Stretching 27 kilometers, the section connects national road N2 near Driouch to national road N16, ending just 8 kilometes from the Nador West Med port complex.
Ilyas El Mouden, representing project owner Société Nationale des Autoroutes du Maroc, said crews are now working on horizontal and vertical signage along with final technical and functional preparations ahead of the section’s opening to traffic. Further south, work continues on a second, 40-kilometre section linking national road N2 to Saka, though that portion remains in its early stages at roughly 8 percent completion.
The project has required moving nearly 11 million cubic meters of earth, reflecting the difficulty of the terrain and the complexity of the civil engineering involved. The route includes 22 structures, six of them major works built to cross river beds, along with 16 additional crossing structures comprising underpasses and overpasses designed to maintain route continuity and user safety. The project draws entirely on Moroccan expertise, from construction firms and engineering offices to technical laboratories and the teams overseeing and monitoring the works.
The highway link represents a total investment of 7.8 billion dirhams. With the Driouch-Nador West Med section nearing completion, the future port will move closer to Morocco’s national highway network, a first step meant to ease road and logistics flows around the port complex, support the region’s economic opening, and strengthen its attractiveness. Over time, the new link is expected to support Nador West Med’s growing activity and back economic development across the wider Oriental region.
