Former Ivorian Prime Minister Guillaume Soro was re-elected leader of the Generations and Peoples in Solidarity (GPS) movement during a virtual presidential election over the week-end.
More than 1,700 members voted for Soro, who stood as the sole candidate, despite the movement being dissolved by an Ivorian Court in June 2021, over alleged subversive activities.
GPS communications officer Moussa Touré said the movement continued to regard itself as a legally recognised organization because its appeal remained before the Court of Cassation.
Following his re-election, Soro outlined eight priorities, including expanding the movement, and pledged to sustain it despite the challenges it faces.
Political scientist Geoffroy Julien Kouao said the election was intended to strengthen the legitimacy of Soro’s leadership. He noted, however, that Soro’s return to Côte d’Ivoire would be crucial to reviving the movement and generating new political momentum.
