Tanzanian President John Magufuli will seek a new five-year term. He was unanimously nominated this Saturday, July 11, to be the candidate of his party, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), for the next presidential election.
All the members of the CCM, the ruling party, voted for President John Magufuli, 60 years old and his party’s only nomination candidate, to run for the presidency.
Elected for the first time in 2015, he made the fight against corruption one of the priorities of his first term. But at the price of authoritarian governance, according to human rights organisations and the international community. This earned him criticism for human rights violations. John Magufuli has also recently been criticized for his opaque management of the health crisis in his country by minimizing the danger of the coronavirus.
The date of the next presidential election is not yet known, but the opposition has already indicated that it will not boycott the elections as it did in 2019 for the local elections. It has also called for the establishment of an independent electoral commission.
