Carlos Queiroz was chosen Wednesday as coach of the Egyptian soccer team, a position where he succeeds Hossam Badri, who was dismissed Monday, announced the Egyptian Football Association in a statement.
The federation said that Mr. Queiroz will be assisted by the Egyptian Diaa al-Sayed, as coach, and Essam al-Hadary, as goalkeeper coach.
On Monday, the day after a difficult draw against Gabon (1-1) in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers, the federation had sacked Hossam Badri and his entire technical team.
Badri, 61, had succeeded in September 2019 to the Mexican Javier Aguirre, himself dismissed after the elimination of the Pharaohs in the round of 16 of the last African Cup of Nations.
The 68-year-old Portuguese has coached Sporting Portugal (1993-1996), Real Madrid (2003-2004) and was assistant to Alex Ferguson at English club Manchester United (2002-2003 and 2004-2008)
He was also the coach of Portugal (1991-1993 and 2008-2010), South Africa (2000-2002), United Arab Emirates (1997-1999) and Iran (2011-2019).
