The extraordinary summit of ECOWAS ended Thursday evening, September 16, with a series of measures against Guinea. It is a message of firmness that the West African leaders wanted to send to the junta in Guinea.
In all, six points were made on Thursday evening at the end of the extraordinary summit of ECOWAS. First, there is the maintenance of the suspension of Guinea from all bodies of the organization until the restoration of constitutional order.
Then there is the travel ban for all members of the CNRD and their family members. The heads of state of the regional organization also decided to freeze the financial assets of the coup plotters.
The duration of the transition was mentioned during the discussions. It should not exceed six months and will be led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya assisted by a civilian Prime Minister.
ECOWAS called on African Union, United Nations and European Union to back the sanctions on the junta known as National Committee of Reconciliation and Development or CNRD by its French initials.
Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo is scheduled to travel to Conakry within 48 hours to demand the immediate and unconditional release of deposed President Alpha Conde, who is still being held at an undisclosed location, and to convey the summit’s conclusions to Guinea’s new leaders.
