Sahara: Luxembourg Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan Offering Realistic Political Solution

Luxembourg has voiced support to the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 for a lasting and peaceful resolution of the Sahara regional conflict.

In a joint statement released following talks he held Tuesday in Rabat with Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita, Luxembourg’s top diplomat Jean Asselborn hailed the autonomy plan as a serious and credible effort made by Morocco saying it is a good basis for reaching a mutually acceptable solution to the Sahara issue.
He also reaffirmed his country’s firm backing to the UN-led process seeking to find a realistic, pragmatic and lasting political solution to the Sahara dispute.

In the joint statement, Luxembourg insists on the UN exclusive role in the political process and supports the UN Security Council Resolution 2602 which calls on the parties to the Sahara conflict to move towards a realistic, practicable, enduring and mutually acceptable political solution based on compromise.

The two ministers reiterated strong support to the efforts made by UN Sahara envoy Staffan De Mistura to advance the political process on the basis of the UN Security Council resolutions.

Several European countries including neighboring Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Hungary, Romania, Portugal, Serbia… support Morocco’s autonomy plan offered for the Sahara under its sovereignty.
