Bola Tinubu, the candidate of Nigeria’s ruling APC party, will succeed Muhammadu Buhari as president. After four days of counting, Tinubu received the highest number of votes in the presidential election on Wednesday, March 1. The National Electoral Commission (Inec) confirmed his victory, with the candidate also having won 25 per cent of the votes in at least two-thirds of the 36 states of the federation, as well as the capital territory, Abuja.
Bola Tinubu, who was running to succeed Muhammadu Buhari as head of Africa’s most populous country, won 8.8 million votes. He is ahead of his main rivals Atiku Abubakar of the PDP (6.9 million votes) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (6.1 million votes), according to a state-by-state compilation of votes.
The National Electoral Commission (Inec), which was at work for much of the night from February 28 to Wednesday, March 1, confirmed his victory. Bola Tinubu won 25 per cent of the votes in at least two-thirds of the 36 states of the federation, as well as the Abuja Capital Territory. He thus won one of the most competitive elections in Nigeria’s democratic history.
